Producer Jason Blum Promises Ouija Sequel Will “Get It Right”

While we’re well used to horror movie sequels popping up even when few seem to have asked for them, it isn’t too often that we see a filmmaker openly admitting the previous film wasn’t all that great to begin with.

However, producer Jason Blum of horror hitmakers Blumhouse has done just this in the run-up to ‘Ouija: Origin of Evil,’ follow-up to 2014′s ‘Ouija.’

Sharing the trailer for the upcoming sequel on Twitter, Bloom declared, “I know ouija wasn’t perfect. think we got it right this time thx to @flanaganfilm.”

@Flanaganfilm is director Mike Flanagan, who - along with his co-writer Jeff Howard - is responsible for a few of the most intriguing, intelligent and atmospheric horror movies of the last few years, prior to taking on the ‘Ouija’ sequel.

Flanagan announced himself to horror audiences with 2012′s low-budget ghost story ‘Absentia,’ but really made a name for himself with 2014′s higher-profile ‘Oculus,’ starring Karen Gillan.

Both films put as much emphasis on character and dialogue as they did on crafting scares, which paid off.

Since then, Flanagan’s offbeat slasher movie ‘Hush’ (centred on a deaf woman whose home comes under attack by a masked maniac) has proved popular on Netflix, and his supernatural chiller ‘Before I Wake’ (delayed by Relativity Media’s financial difficulties) is also released this year.

The new trailer (see below) certainly inspires confidence that ‘Ouija: Origin of Evil’ will stand apart from its predecessor. Technically a prequel set in the 1970s, the film looks to share nothing with the first ‘Ouija’ aside from the iconic board - which, of course, was always meant to be the star.

We’ll see if they really did get it right this time when ‘Ouija: Origin of Evil’ opens on 21 October.
