Princess Beatrice hasn’t always been celebrated for her fashion choices.

The royal is arguably just as famous for her 2011 wedding hat as she is for being the Queen’s granddaughter.

The princess, who turns 30 today, unwittingly became a global laughing stock at Kate and William’s big day thanks to her Philip Treacy fascinator.

The unusual design was likened to everything from a sea creature to a toilet seat, and soon landed its own Facebook page.

The coverage, in fact, was so ruthless that Princess Beatrice was left in tears by what she read.

At the time, the princess stood up for her accessory of choice (“I’m so glad it’s provoked so much conversation,” she told Grazia) , while Treacy has since revealed he feared he would end up with his “head on a spike.”

Since that sartorial slip-up, Beatrice has, by all accounts, worked hard to turn her style around. According to The Telegraph, Beatrice – along with sister, Eugenie – briefly hired Tatler‘s former fashion director for guidance before finding her fashion feet.

A move across the pond to New York no doubt also helped the royal up her style ante. Mixing with top model Karlie Kloss and attending high-fashion events thrown by brands like Proenza Schouler, Louis Vuitton and the V&A museum, Beatrice has really honed her look.

Her appearance at this year’s infamous Met Gala in New York appeared to cement her status as a fashionable royal.

But it was her photoshoot in the September issue of British Vogue, alongside Eugenie, that really made the world pay attention. Dressed in a military inspired jacket by Dolce & Gabbana, a Chanel skirt and androgynous brogues, Beatrice looked more high-fashion model than royal.
