Prince William jokes his hip flask was switched with Jägermeister at Submariners' Remembrance Service

The Duke of Cambridge made a joke about his drink containing Jägermeister, rather than rum, at the Submariners’ Remembrance Service on Sunday.

Following the laying of wreaths, Prince William joined the “Toast to Absent Friends,” with a swig from a hip flask.

During the reception in Middle Temple Hall, the 36-year-old royal appeared to suggest that his flask had been tampered with.

When asked if he had bought one along, the prince said: “I’ll never be asked twice about drinking, it’s very important.

“They tried to put a Jägerbomb in it! Imagine my surprise; burnt my throat!”

He recounted the story again later, saying: “They tried to put Jägerbomb instead of rum – that would have sorted me out was expecting rum and got a Jägerbomb.”

This service and parade is held each year to honour submariners of all generations who have ‘Crossed the Bar’ in service to their country.

The Duke is Commodore-in-Chief of the Submarine Service and paid his respects to fallen servicemen at the service.

The annual ceremony, which is held every year a week before Remembrance Sunday, was first held in 1923 after the National Submarine Memorial was unveiled on the nearby Victoria Embankment in 1922.

William’s brother, the Duke of Sussex will visit the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey on Thursday 8 November.

The Queen and other members of the Royal Family will attend the annual Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall and the Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph, the following day.
