There were a lot of claims floating around that the palace was entirely shocked when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stepped down from senior royal duties—and Oprah straight-up asked Harry if he “blindsided” the Queen and the rest of the royals.

On the contrary, Harry explained that he was constantly in touch with his grandmother and his father while he and Meghan were in Canada planning their exit from senior royal duties. “No. I’ve never blindsided my grandmother. I have too much respect for her,” he said. Oprah then asked where the story came from if it wasn’t true, and Harry responded, “I hazard a guess that [the story] probably could have come from within the Institution.”

Harry went on to explain that “when we were in Canada, I had three conversations with my grandmother and two conversations with my father before he stopped taking my calls,” saying that he tried to be as transparent with his family as possible.

“I was desperate,” he said earlier in the interview. “I went to all the places which I thought I should go to to ask for help. We both did. Separately and together.”

Yikes. This is pretty illuminating and far from the story that’s been circulating. As of now, Prince Charles hasn’t commented on Harry’s allegations, and apparently, he and the rest of the royals aren’t watching this interview.
