What is Amazon Prime Day?

Prime Day is Amazon’s largest global shopping event designed exclusively for Prime Members.

The annual savings day was first introduced in 2015 to commemorate the online retail giant’s 20th anniversary.

After it proved a huge success - Amazon reportedly made more money than any Black Friday in its history - Prime Day soon became an annual tradition.

Last year alone, the company pulled in more sales than any Cyber Monday, Black Friday or previous Prime Day alone from customers spanning 17 countries.

According to Bloomberg, that equated to an impressive $4.2 billion (approximately £3.3 billion) worth of sales after flogging more than 100 million products in total.

Bestsellers reportedly included the Amazon Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote and Echo Dot.

When is Prime Day 2019?

The official start date of Prime Day 2019 has finally been revealed and will take place over 48 hours on Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th July 2019.

Is Amazon Prime Day only for Prime members?

You have to be an Amazon Prime member in order to take part in Prime Day.

Here in the UK, membership costs £7.99 a month or £79 per annum and includes access to everything from free one-day delivery to music streaming services.

Students can sign up to an even more purse-friendly deal too, as you’ll receive unlimited next day delivery (for no cost at all) for the first six months. All you need to do it provide evidence that you’re a student through the likes of UNiDAYS.

Once your six months is up, the service will cost you £39 per year - that’s an annual saving of 50%.

Prime Day is open to members across 17 countries including North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific.

When do Amazon Prime Day sales end?

Amazon Prime Day usually lasts at least 24 hours and last year, it was extended to 36 hours - that’s plenty of time to shop the best deals.

But if you’re after something in particular then you’ll need to work fast, as most Lightning Deals will only appear for four hours at a time and tend to sell out fast.

Amazon Prime Day tips

  1. To save precious shopping time ahead of the big savings event, it’s a good idea to produce a wish list. That way, you can simply add deals to your basket as they drop.

  2. Sign up to the waiting lists so you won’t miss out on anything that comes back in stock.

  3. Sign up to receive notifications on the items you’re after. The Amazon app will enable you to track forthcoming deals so that’s also worth downloading ahead of the big day.

  4. Give a donation. If you plan on spending big this year then use the Amazon Smile initiative to give back. For every purchase you make, 0.5% of the total cost is donated to a charity of your choice.
