Lionsgate’s all-new big screen take on 1990s TV favourite ‘Power Rangers’ is out in cinemas everywhere from today – so what’s the logical thing to do immediately? That’s right, start teasing the sequel!

The new release from director Dean Israelite introduces Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger Jason, Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger Kimberly, RJ Cyler as the Blue Ranger Billy, Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger Zack, and Becky G as the Yellow Ranger Trini – the five core characters from the earliest incarnation of ‘Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.’

However, as fans of the original series will know, it wasn’t long before a sixth member joined the action in the form of Tommy, the Green Ranger – and while this character is not part of this movie, it seems the plan is for him to show up in the next chapter.

The official ‘Power Rangers’ Twitter feed would appear to have confirmed as much with this image:

There have been reports that a post-credits scene in ‘Power Rangers’ will also point toward the arrival of the Green Ranger, but we cannot confirm that at this point.

Played in the TV series by Jason David Frank, Tommy was initially a villain, brainwashed and imbued with Ranger powers by the evil Rita Repulsa as part of her plan to take the Rangers down. As well as being as strong as the Rangers, he also commanded a giant Dragon Zord (very cool) via some magic panpipes (somewhat less cool).

However, Tommy wound up joining forces with the Power Rangers and soon became the show’s most popular character, ultimately being promoted to their leader as the all-powerful White Ranger; Frank appeared in this guise in 1995’s ‘Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie.’ Frank also became the longest-serving Power Rangers actor, returning to the series numerous times over the years.

Of course, this hint of a Green future doesn’t necessarily mean a second ‘Power Rangers’ is a sure thing just yet. However, producer and franchise mastermind Haim Saban has already declared that as many as five sequels could be made should the $100 million-budgeted film prove a big enough success at the box office.

So far ‘Power Rangers’ has met a middling response from critics: its Rotten Tomatoes score (sorry, Brett Ratner) is 43% fresh at present, although the site also notes an 82% approval rating from audiences.
