Power Rangers Given a Drastic Makeover For Movie Reboot

It’s official – we’ve got our first look at the new ‘Power Rangers’ costumes.

The Power Rangers are heading back to the big screen, and they’ve had a bit of a makeover since their Mighty Morphin’ days. Of course, we can still expect five teenagers clad in slinky suits with kick-ass martial arts moves…

But Entertainment Weekly has revealed a futuristic reimagining of the classic ‘Power Rangers’ look.

And apparently, they’re not just costumes anymore…

“It’s tricky finding a new language for a superhero costume,” production designer Andrew Menzies told Entertainment Weekly. “Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made,” he added. “You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans.”

An alien costume which grows on each power Ranger?

That’s certainly a new direction, and sounds an awful lot like the classic symbiotic suit from the ‘Guyver’ Manga series… so not exactly a brand new concept. But it does give the Power Rangers another new origin.

And as for the suits themselves, well… they’re… different.

Even if they are inspired by the classic ‘Power Rangers’ look.

“The show was about kids coming of age, about metamorphosis,” said director Dean Israelite. “These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit.”

Getting rid of the classic spandex look, instead they’ve gone for a far more futuristic, armoured suit – reminiscent of the Iron Man suit… but far cheesier. Still, it’s definitely an improvement on spandex and motorcycle helmets.

And Rita Repulsor’s updated look is just as radical.
