Power Rangers: new Megazord revealed

We’ve seen the new ‘Power Rangers’ in their human form and in their super-powered uniforms, and we’ve seen Elizabeth Banks as their nemesis Rita Repulsa – now, we have our first glimpse of their most powerful weapon of all.

The official ‘Power Rangers’ Instagram account has just released the first photo of the new Megazord – albeit in toy form.

And, in line with the more grounded and downbeat tone the first trailer implied, it’s a far cry from the bright and cheerful ‘Power Rangers’ of old.

A recurring element of all the various incarnations of ‘Power Rangers’ – beginning with the 1990s TV series ‘Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,’ on which the upcoming movie is modelled – is that, on top of being superhuman martial arts masters, the Rangers also pilot individual robot dinosaurs named Zords.

In times of particular need - i.e. when the monster the Rangers are fighting suddenly increases in size by about 200 feet, which happens surprisingly often - these Zords in turn combine to form the mighty Megazord.

And, in the new film from director Dean Israelite (‘Project Almanac’), it will look something like this:

The official description reads, “Go Go Power Rangers! The Interactive #PowerRangersMovie Megazord features expandable wings, battle sounds, dynamic LED effects & more! Includes all five 2” Rangers. Stay tuned for pre-sale dates on rangernation.com!”

Much as the new look Ranger suits were not too well received, general fan reaction to the new Megazord does not seem too positive at present.

Comments on the Instagram photo range from “This looks horrible. I understand the need to innovate, but this is just a change for the sake of a change,” to “This will take some getting used to,” to “It’s a pretty cool giant robot design. But it’s not Power Rangers. It’s a Pacific Rim robot with wings.”

‘Power Rangers’ opens in UK cinemas on 24 March 2017.
