A pair of special edition Crocs shoes have sold out in less than 10 minutes.

The much-coveted Crocs from the brand’s second collaboration with American rapper Post Malone were released went on sale at 2pm EST yesterday, but less than a quarter of an hour passed before they were snapped up.

Who is Post Malone and why is he collaborating with Crocs?

Post Malone, 23, is an American rapper, songwriter and record producer. Earlier this year, his song ‘Rockstar’ featuring 21 Savage won Top Rap Song at the Billboard Music Awards.

His numerous tattoos, including a barbed wire design on his face, inspire his second collaboration with the Crocs brand.

Post has declared himself an avid fan of Crocs, claiming to wear them ‘everywhere’.

In a press release, he said: “If you like something, go get it. I wear Crocs everywhere from the bar to the stage and I felt it was the perfect collaboration to get together with Crocs and give the fans what they’ve been asking for.”

When did Crocs become high fashion?

Crocs were originally developed as a boating shoe in 2002. Over the years, they have polarised consumers, with some high-profile fans (George W. Bush, Michelle Obama, Prince George) and also strong critics, including a pair of Canadian university students who founded a website called IhateCrocs.com.

The shoes entered the fashion world in 2016, when a wet-look, jewel encrusted version featured in Christopher Kane’s spring/summer 2017 catwalk show.

The shoe’s second foray into the fashion world came in Balenciaga’s autumn/winter 2017 show, when the fashion house collaborated with Crocs to produce a towering platform version.

Cult following aside, many people on the internet are questioning quite why anyone would choose to spend so much on the shoes, which invite ‘Spongebob’ and ‘clown shoes’ comparisons.

The Crocs aren’t the only divisive fashion item to receive a cult following on the internet.

Recently, Moncler’s ‘Isadora’ puffer dress, which retails at £2,415, sold out online after Ezra Miller wore it to the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ premiere.
