Billy Porter, the breakthrough star of the FX show Pose, is in talks to take on the role of the Fairy Godmother in a new, reimagined musical version of Cinderella, to be made by James Corden.

Sony is to remake the classic story – rather than Disney, which rebooted it in 2015, directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Lily James – with Corden as a producer.

Kay Cannon, who helmed the received sex comedy Blockers last year, is set to direct, with Corden's Fulwell73 company making the movie.

Porter won an Emmy for his role as ball culture emcee Pray Tell in Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck's show Pose, and was nominated for a Golden Globe.

Prior to that, he was best known for his work in musical theatre, winning a Tony and a Grammy for his role in Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein's Broadway adaptation of the British movie Kinky Boots, from 2005.
