Popular Yi He Eating House reopens with new arrivals
For those in the know, Yi Hee Eating House at 638 Veerasamy Rd needs no introduction. Sporting a healthy crowd around lunchtime, it’s home to what is regarded as the “Big 4”: Jin Xi Lai (Mui Siong) Minced Meat Noodle, Victor Famous Fried Chicken Wing Rice, Johor Road Boon Kee Pork Porridge, and Tian Wai Tian Fish Head Steamboat.
The coffee shop closed on 1 Sep 2024 for renovations, and reopened on 8 Oct 2024. The interior has gotten a major facelift and now spots modern-looking signages and bright neon lights. Additionally, the name is now stylized as YIHE Eating House. The Big 4 are still in residence and are joined by several new stalls.
Ba Jie Bah Kut Teh (sporting the same name as Zhu Bajie of “Journey to the West” fame) is one of the new arrivals. Hailing from Malaysia, they serve herbal-style bak kut teh. Order the Signature Big Bone Bah Kut Teh (S$9), featuring a large pork bone with tender meat in a robust herbal broth. The Dry Bah Kut Teh (S$8) is a flavour-packed number worth trying if you’re in the mood for something different.
Originally known as Cheng Kee Beef Kway Teow from Kovan, the original owners have since retired and handed down the reins to their assistant, Oscar, who has been working with them for over a decade. He has since rebranded to Cowboy Beef Noodles, but continues to preserve Cheng Kee’s legacy. The Signature Beef Noodle (S$12) is available in either soup or dry, and don’t forget to get their chincalok to take the dish to the next level.
Other new stalls include Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa and Holland V.21 Nasi Lemak, and there’s even lok lok from Fa Ge Lok Lok. No more worrying about what to have for lunch!
