Pop culture galore with special guests gracing STGCC 2018

The Singapore Toy, Game & Comic Convention (STGCC) is set to return this weekend with unique toy figures, exciting games and cosplay plus special guest appearances.

From 8 to 9 September, Singapore’s largest pop culture convention will take place across three Halls of Marina Bay Sands Expo from 10am to 8pm on both days.

Convention passes, priced from $10 to $150, can be purchased through the STGCC website, as well as at Kinokuniya and Action City outlets islandwide.

Here are some of the highlights of this year’s STGCC:

Toy Figures

Limited-edition toy collectibles from pop culture brands such as Hot Toys, Medicom Toy (BE@RBRICK)​, Bandai (Daruma Club)​, tokidoki​ and DEVILROBOTS (TO-FU) will be unveiled at the convention.

Visitors can look forward to viewing the exclusive “tokidoki x Hello Kitty Series 2” collection. There will also be the tokidoki Unicorno Metallico Series 3 – previously exclusive to the San Diego Comic Con – which includes statuettes, keychains, vinyl tote bags, and assorted keychains. tokidoki’s hard-working tiger, Torayama-san – also known as Salary Man Tiger – will be sold in three different colour designs. tokidoki toy designer Simone Legno will also be gracing the convention.

A series of statue collections from Singaporean luxury art collectible maker XM Studios will be unveiled featuring collectibles of characters from Hulk Transformation, Guardians of the Galaxy and the X-Men series.

Visitors can also marvelled at a Spider-Man figure designed in colours of metallic red, green, blue and gold, made specially to commemorate Marvel Studio’s 10th anniversary.

Good Gaming Experience (GGXP)

The World Electronic Sports Games (WESG) – touted as the “Olympics of eSports” – will be holding its Singapore qualifier during the convention. Local gaming athletes will compete against one another in games such as “Counter Strike: Global Offensive”, “Dota 2”, “Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft”, “Starcraft II” ​and “Vainglory”​.

Visitors can engage in games at the table-top and trading card tournament sections. They can play table-top games including “Team Yankee”, “TANKS!”, “Warhammer”, and “X-Wing: Miniatures” and trading card games such as “Pokemon GO” and “Dragon Ball Super Card Game”.

Comic, Manga and Art Guests

Visitors can look forward to meeting several Marvel creators and artists at the convention including its Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding, comic artist David Finch, as well as Eisner-nominated comic illustrator and designer Mark Brooks, who recently unveiled his rendition of the Batmobile for the Detective Comics series.

Other guests are Arthur Adams, James C Mulligan, Agnes Garbowska, Range Murata, Frank Cho, Adi Granov, Sonny Liew, Peach MoMoKo, Yishan Li and Joyce Chin, who pencilled DC Comics works such as Superman, Legion, Supergirl, and Guy Gardner: Warrior.

Cosplay

Visitors can watch their favourite characters come to life at the STGCC Championships of Cosplay.

Taiwanese cosplayers AJO, Shiraga and Zekia, Canadian cosplayer Hikarin, as well as American cosplayer Olivia Mears, whose works have been shared by US TV celebrities such as Ryan Seacrest and Seth Meyers, will dazzle visitors with their stunning outfits.

Visitors can also assemble their own geek superhero cape in any of the four telephone booths at the SINGER Sewing Company’s Experience Zone. There will be up to 1,000 capes for fans to sew and realise their superhero dreams plus a chance to win SINGER-sponsored prizes in a contest.

Entertainment and Creator Guests

Crowd favourite Fukuoka Kanbe Girls, “Kawaii x Fun x Idol Unit!” group chuLa, voice actor Ueda Kana, and pianist AkaiRyusei are some of the guests attending this year’s convention. Other guests include ginrei, Rie Yunohara, MauKana, Kurume Maimu, TAM, Shouya Namai, Polyphonix and YUC’e.
