Break out the good china we have an engagement to celebrate. Pippa Middleton, lil sis of the Duchess of Cambridge has got engaged to her boyfriend James Matthews.

James, a hedge fund manager, reportedly got down on one knee over the weekend in the Lake District. And though the deed apparently took Pippa completely by surprise, she quickly said ‘yes’ to the romantic proposal.

Wanting to do things the old-fashioned way, James, 40, apparently got permission from his future father-in-law, Michael Middleton, before popping the question with a stunning diamond ring.

“James is a traditionalist and very much wanted to do things properly,” a friend of the couple’s revealed to the Daily Mail. “That meant getting the consent of his future father-in-law.”

And the ring he proposed with was pretty spectacular. Pippa was spotted leaving her home this morning with a big smile - and an even bigger diamond.

Pippa and James – the older brother of Made In Chelsea star Spencer Matthews – had a brief romance in 2012 before rekindling their relationship last year.

Their wedding – which the royal rumour mill predicts will be next year – is sure to be the most splashy and talked about affair since Pippa’s sister Kate’s wedding to Prince William five years ago.

Of course, it was that event that first thrust Pippa into the limelight after her star turn as her sister’s maid of honour in THAT figure hugging Alexander McQueen bridesmaid dress.

So far, Pippa has been pretty coy at showing off her new sparkler. The 32-year-old kept her left hand under wraps as she stepped out on Monday night at the Frost Summer Party Fundraiser. The event, raising money for the British Heart Foundation’s Miles Frost Fund, was held at Burton Court in London.

Just a few weeks ago the pair were spotted at Wimbledon looking completely loved up, which did spark whispers that an engagement might be on the cards. Now that it has seemingly been confirmed, we can focus on speculating about the big day instead. Will she wear McQueen like her sister? Will the cast of Made in Chelsea get an invite? One things for sure, if she can be front page news after a stint as a bridesmaid, imagine what it will be like when she’s the actual bride?!
