Pia Wurtzbach explains tweet about Vietnam

19 May – Pia Wurtzbach has recently apologised to netizens of Vietnam for the misunderstanding caused by her previous tweet.

As reported on Push, the Miss Universe 2015 previously sparked backlash after posting on Twitter, "There are more pageant fans in Vietnam than in the Philippines?", following Vietnam's representative Nguyen Tran Khanh Van securing a spot in the Top 21 at the recent Miss Universe pageant after getting the highest fan votes in the competition's 69-year history.

Many Vietnamese fans thought the question was rude, with one netizen stating that they have solidarity when it comes to voting their representative. Another netizen even expressed anger over the question, saying that she lost all respect for Wurtzbach for questioning their beauty queen.

On 18 May, the actress took to social media to explain herself, stating that she meant no harm with her previous tweet.

"For years I was told (and I believed) that the Philippines had the most pageant fans in the world. But yesterday Vietnam got the highest votes in history!" she said, and continued, "which meant I was wrong. Which surprised me! That's it! That's all I meant by my tweet!"

"I wasn't being sarcastic or questioning your win at all! Hope this clears it up. Congratulations Vietnam for the highest votes in the Miss Universe history!" she added.

Miss Mexico Andrea Meza was crowned Miss Universe 2020 at the event that was held on 17 May at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, and the first and second runner-ups being Miss Brazil Julia Gama and Miss Peru Janick Maceta Del Castillo.
