PHOTOS: Skygazers in Singapore marvel at blood moon eclipse

Astronomy enthusiasts in Singapore gathered in the wee hours of Saturday (28 July) to witness a blood moon in what was the longest-ever total lunar eclipse this century.

The eclipse – a result of the moon being perfectly aligned with the Sun and Earth – lasted several hours between 1am and 6am, and was visible in parts of Asia, Africa, South America, Europe and Australia.

It coincided with a Mars opposition, a phenomenon that occurs when Mars is at its closest to the Sun and Earth.

The opposition, which occurs every 26 months, made Mars appear five times brighter than usual when viewed from Earth.

Skygazers started gathering at the Singapore Maritime Gallery at Marina South Pier on Friday evening (27 July) to catch the celestial event.

Such astronomical occurrences were last seen in Singapore in January this year when a rare “super blue blood moon” appeared in the night sky for the first time since 1866.
