Peter Jackson to adapt sci-fi fantasy of post-apocalyptic future

Peter Jackson's next big fantasy project will be a film adaptation of Philip Reeve's sci-fi fantasy series "Mortal Engines" set in a dystopian future.

Only this time, the "Lord of the Rings" and "Hobbit" director will be relinquishing the director's chair to longtime protege Christian Rivers, who will make his directorial debut, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

For the project, Jackson co-wrote the script with wife Fran Walsh and collaborator Philippa Boyens. He will also be producing.

The four-part series of the steampunk genre is set in a post-apocalyptic world in which cities like London are built to be run on engines and wheels, enabling them to dismantle other cities for resources.

The story centers on a teen named Tom Natsworthy who, along with a young woman from a territory known as the Outlands, uncovers a mystery that could change the world order.
