30 Sep – Peter Chan surprised many recently upon revealing that he had cast Gong Li in the role of former volleyball player Lang Ping in his new sports movie, "LEAP".
In an interview with Tencent recently, Chan, whose film was launched in China on 30 September, stated that his decision to persuade Gong to play the role of Lang in the movie was due to what he deemed as similarities between the two of them.
"She has the same status in the film circle as Lang Ping in the sports. They both started their careers in the 1980s, the first to go abroad and become international stars, and then becoming a great influence to Chinese women everywhere," he said.
Chan added that he can't even think of another person who would be suitable for the role.
When mentioned that Gong is only 170cm tall compared to Lang, who is known for her stature at 184cm, Chan stressed that it was hard to find an actress with similar height.
"At first I felt that the camera position or special effects can do the trick, but I was very worried when we started filming, especially when Gong was with the other volleyball players since they were very tall. We later discussed several plans that include putting Gong on a higher platform. But as we began shooting, everybody felt that Gong's acting ability and aura will enable to convince the audience," he said.
