When we were children, words of wisdom from our parents was often greeted with a shudder, and washed over us never to be thought about again.

But people have heartwarmingly been revealing the life advice from mum and dad which has stuck with them into adulthood.

And it turns out its the most sensible titbits which have the best staying power in our heads.

It all started when writer Dan Diamond asked Twitter: “What’s the best advice your parents ever gave you?”

He then shared what his own had passed on, writing: “Dad: The most important quality in a partner is kindness.

“Mom: Be brave and powerful forces will come to your aid.”

His post soon racked up over a thousand ‘likes’ and more than two thousand people shared their own sweet stories of loving parental guidance.

One person replied: “Among others: always tip well. If you can make someone’s day better with an extra dollar, then do it.”

Another commented: “Always look back at your seat and the ground around it when standing up to leave a room, car, subway, etc.”

A third shared: “My father: Never belittle someone for what they do for a job. All work is noble

“My mother: things work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.”

Meanwhile, a fourth added: “Everyone is struggling in some way, so try to be kind.”

And some of the responses were very tongue-in-cheek.

One person wrote simply that their parents had instilled in them: “Don’t speed.”

In one of the more relatable replies, another commented: “Send thank you notes.”

So, if you’re a parent, remember that the important advice you pass on to your children is likely to stay with them for years to come.
