Paul McCartney releases first children’s book, ‘Hey Grandude'!

Sir Paul McCartney may be a world-famous rock star, but to his grandchildren he is known as the ‘Grandude’.

The affectionate term birthed the idea behind the former Beatles star first children’s book, out today.

‘Hey Grandude’, a play on the title of The Beatles’ famous song ‘Hey Jude’, is based on McCartney’s own experiences of being a grandfather.

The 77-year-old said the idea for his book was inspired by his grandchildren’s nickname for him.

“One of my grandkids - who used to call me Grandad - just happened one day to say ‘Grandude’ and it kind of stuck,” he said in an interview with The Times. “So the other kids started calling me ‘Grandude.’”

The story follows Grandude as he takes his four grandkids off on a whirlwind adventure around the globe, riding with horses with a cowboy in the desert, facing an army of crabs on a tropical beach and dodging an avalanche whilst having a picnic up a mountain.

“Grandude isn’t supposed to be me,” he explained. “Because he’s magic and I’m not.”

McCartney worked with artist Kathryn Durst to create colourful illustrations that parents, grandparents and children can all enjoy.

The Beatle will be taking part in a rare signing at the Piccadilly branch of London’s Waterstones alongside Durst to celebrate his new children’s book on September 6.

The hardback book is now available to buy on Amazon for £9.99, and he has also narrated an audio version of the book complete with an instrumental soundtrack.

He’s not the only celebrity who has written a children’s book. Radio DJ and TV presenter Fearne Cotton wrote a book for children which combined her love of reading and yoga, both of which she said she enjoys doing with her children.

Actress Whoopi Goldberg wrote a book series called the Sugar Plum Ballerinas, which follows ballet-mad girls from the Nutcracker School of Ballet as they work through stage fright.
