A rebooted Star Trek series starring Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard could be in the offing.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, writer, director and producer Alex Kurtzman is behind the plans.

He penned the 2009 cinematic reboot of the feted series for J.J. Abrams, and its sequel Star Trek Into Darkness, and is also the executive producer and showrunner of the Star Trek: Discovery TV series.

It’s part of a five-year deal with the US broadcaster CBS which is worth $5 million per year for Kurtzman.

Stewart recently hinted that he could be returning to where no man has gone before.

Collared at a red carpet event, he was asked whether he’d seen the Discovery series, which airs on Netflix, to which he replied he had not, but ‘may have good cause to look at it very soon’.

Stewart played Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, which aired from 1987 to 1994.

It was a huge hit for CBS, winning 19 Emmys over its seven series run, and making a worldwide star of Stewart, who at the time was better known for his stage work.

On his casting, the Los Angeles Times memorably called him an ‘unknown British Shakespearean actor’.

However, he went on to make the character of Picard one of the most iconic in the Star Trek franchise, also appearing in movies Star Trek Generations, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, and Star Trek: Nemesis.
