The past fashion fail Nicole Richie won't repeat

As a designer behind her own fashion labels, House of Harlow and Honey Minx, Nicole Richie is a source of style inspiration many people look up to.

However, it seems even fashion queens like herself have outfit regrets through the years and Nicole’s one is a classic.

Speaking to Yahoo, the 37-year-old revealed that her biggest fashion fail was one she picked up from a sitcom that aired while she was younger.

“I was a big ‘Punky Brewster’ [a sitcom about a plucky American orphan] fan when I was little and I went through a solid year of mismatching my socks and shoes when I was in school,” Nicole admits. “It’s not my most fashionable moment.

“My mum begged me not to dress like that when I went to parties with her but I would do it and those are the photos that are up all over her house so I am constantly reminded of that stage when I go to my parents’ house.”

Thankfully for all of us, our outfit choices often evolve with age and according to the mum-of-two, “that is the fun part of fashion”.

“I used to be anti-pink but now I love pink,” Nicole tells Yahoo.

“I think that your eye changes and your taste changes and I’m not one to say ‘I will do this or I won’t do that’ because it is so temporary and it is of the moment.

“And it’s very emotional. It’s really about what is going on in your world and what you’re feeling and so [my style] has changed over the years,” she further explains.

Despite being a fashion influence to many around the world, Nicole admits she never looked to others for ideas on how to style herself.

“For me, it’s less about an aesthetic that I want to emulate and more about the people that really go for their look in full force,” she says.

“My love for fashion started with mum. She was going to every event with my dad in the 80s and she was out every night. While we have very different styles – it was the act of watching her put her looks together that really inspired me to go into clothing myself.”
