Need Parenting Support? Here’s What MSF Is Offering

·6-min read

While being a parent can be fulfilling, it can also be quite difficult. Especially with everything that’s going on in the world. But no parent should ever feel guilty for needing extra support in caring for their families.

If you are looking for parenting support, the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) offers the Triple P Parenting Programme and Signposts. These are two evidence-based programmes for Parenting Support Providers (PSPs).

What Are Parenting Support Providers?

To provide parenting support services on a regular basis, the MSF has appointed Parenting Support Providers or PSPs.

These work closely with schools and community partners in their allocated regions. They are meant to support parents and their children depending on their needs.

PSPs offer parenting programmes and referrals to services parents may require. Their programmes include the Triple P Parenting Programme and Signposts.

Parents can sign up for these programmes by contacting the PSPs serving in their child’s school. Or they can also approach their child’s school Teacher-In-Charge of Parenting Programmes.

The Positive Parenting Programme, or the Triple P Parenting Programme, equips parents with techniques that can promote their child’s psychological, social and emotional competence. This can be for parents with children aged up to 16 years.

Based on evaluation studies, this programme has had positive effects on parenting and child outcomes in Singapore. According to reports from parents, the Triple P Parenting Programmes has helped them achieve:

  • Greater parenting competence

  • Lower parenting stress

  • Improved emotional states

  • Reduced behavioural problems in their children

Parents also say they had a sustained reduction of around 20 percent in their child’s problematic behaviour scores and parenting stress scores three months after they manage to complete the programme.

The Triple P Parenting Programme is built on a tiered system. These provide parental support to different degrees.

Triple P Level 2 Seminar Series

This includes three seminars two hours long each for parents of primary and secondary school children. The seminars are also for parents who are coping well with their children’s needs.

1. Triple Level 2 Seminar Series for parents with children up to 12-years-old

  • Seminar 1: Positive parenting

  • Seminar 2: Raising confident, competent children

  • Seminar 3: Raising resilient children

2. Triple Level 2 Seminar Series for parents with teenagers up to 16-years-old

  • Seminar 1: Raising responsible teenagers

  • Seminar 2: Raising competent teenagers

  • Seminar 3: Getting teenagers connected

Triple P Level 3

The next level involves four one-to-one consultation sessions for parents who need more help with children who are displaying mild to moderate behavioural difficulties.

Triple P Level 4

Level 4 is for parents who have children with severe behavioural difficulties that re1quire targeted, intensive and active parenting training. This offers five group sessions then is followed by three phone consultation sessions.

Triple P Online (TPOL)

The Triple P Programme also offers an online programme to allow parents to complete parenting modules on their own time. They can do so either from a computer, tablet or smartphone.

Parents will have online access to the programme for 12 months. The programme has a toolbox of strategies to help parents encourage positive behaviour and prevent as well as manage misbehaviour.

It also includes videos, exercises, tips and activities that are suitable for parents of both children and teenagers.

  • TPOL for Toddlers to Tweens (0 to 12 years old): 8 modules

  • TPOL for Pre-teens and Teens (10 to 16 years old): 6 modules

Take note that each module takes around 30 minutes. You can save your progress at any point in the module.

Signposts

The Signposts programme is only for Primary Schools. The programme aims to help parents understand, prevent and better manage their child’s difficult behaviour.

Parents will also learn how to develop strategies in order to prevent and manage such behaviour.

It offers a personalised programme that suits the unique needs of each child. You can attend the 5 weekly group sessions of 2.5 hours each.
