‘Paradise Lost’ Director Joe Berlinger Joins IDA’s Board Of Directors
EXCLUSIVE: Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning filmmaker Joe Berlinger has joined the International Documentary Association’s (IDA) board of directors.
Said IDA Board President, Marjan Safinia in a statement: “Two years ago, at the inaugural Getting Real 2014 documentary conference, Joe Berlinger spoke movingly about the power of the IDA community rallying to support him as he dealt with law suits from Chevron in response to his film Crude. Having witnessed first-hand the impact and value of an organization and community that supported him in his hour of need, Joe told the conference audience that he was motivated to give back. It was that same day that we started a conversation about him joining the Board of Directors at IDA. It makes me tremendously proud that he will now be taking his seat at the table on the eve of our second Getting Real Conference. Joe has fought in the trenches as a filmmaker, is a fearless, outspoken advocate and a tremendously gifted storyteller. I’m delighted he will be bringing his talent, wisdom and leadership to his new role at IDA.” Berlinger will also feature at IDA’s upcoming Getting Real ’16 conference in Los Angeles which runs from Sept. 27-29.
Berlinger was nominated for an Academy Award in the documentary feature category for his 2012 film Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory, which led to the recent release of the wrongfully-convicted West Memphis Three. Berlinger won two Emmys: one for Ten Days That Unexpectedly Changed America in the 2006 nonfiction category and for Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills in the 1997 informational programming category.Robin Hood Hills was also a Peabody winner that year. In total, Berlinger has been nominated at the Emmys seven times, with recognition for such titles as Paradise Lost 3, the Paul Simon documentary Under African Skies and Paradise Lost 2: Revelations. His film Crude, about oil pollution in the Amazon Rainforest, won 22 human rights, environmental and film festival awards. Six of Berlinger’s documentary features have premiered at the Sundance Film Festival,and he has received multiple awards from the Director’s Guild of America, the National Board of Review and the Independent Spirit Awards. The filmmaker’s latest doc on self help guru Tony Robbins, Tony Robbins: I Am not Your Guru, is currently streaming around the globe on Netflix.
