After a first relatively unsuccessful foray into fashion at the end of the 2010s, so-called 'pantashoes' seem to be resurfacing on the catwalk, as well as on the red carpet. Dua Lipa and Kim Kardashian are some of the celebrities who have been spotted wearing this unusual clothing item that combines pants and ankle boots into a single garment.
And to think that not so long ago, the idea of pants tucked into boots was a fashion faux pas! But while fashion is often seen as an eternal recycling of trends and looks, sometimes it throws us a curveball. The latest one? Pantashoes or pantaboots -- yes, you read that right -- which is none other than a pair of pants (leggings, leather pants, or even jeans) with boots directly built in. Not necessarily a practical design if you're used to removing your shoes at the door, but still (evidently) a top trend.
Kim Kardashian has been one of the celebrities embracing the look for a while now, and it seems that the former reality TV star has even become something of a fan, slipping into pantashoes that she wears like a second skin. Who could forget the head-to-toe black bodysuit -- including hood and shoes -- that the star wore to the 2021 Met Gala? An outfit created by Balenciaga that seems to have pleased the businesswoman so much that she has since stepped out several times in pantashoes, or even jumpsuits with built-in shoes. In black, pink, purple, velvet or lace, it seems that Kim K. now swears by this most surprising of garments.
The luxury fashion house Balenciaga -- to which the star turns for this new kind of pants -- does not (only) supply Kim Kardashian. The brand's e-store features "pantaleggings" in different colors and materials. And it's here where many will meet their first hurdle -- also seen with other brands -- since the garments are sold in a pre-defined pant size and shoe size. So you'll need to fit into the boxes of standard sizing in order to slip into this trendy item.
More recently, Dua Lipa stepped out in a pantashoes creation in quilted denim by Glenn Martens for Diesel, worn with a denim bra top and a matching bag. The brand has been particularly bold in recent months. Not content with turning up the heat at the last Milan Fashion Week, the brand also unveiled a collection of two intimate accessories with LELO. It now follows suit with these strange pantashoes , in a loose jeans version for a streetwear look.
Major fashion houses like Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana and Saint Laurent have already succumbed to the pantashoes trend, as have Rihanna and Lady Gaga. They, too, have already made a few notable appearances in this new pants style. Still, it remains to be seen if the average fashion fan on the street is ready to embrace this totally crazy trend.
