Pakho Chau accused of curry favour with China
18 Dec – Netizens have mixed reactions towards Pakho Chau's recent social media post, after the singer sang praises of the Chinese government about their pandemic prevention programme.
As reported on Mingpao, on 17 December, the Hong Kong singer updated his Weibo with a photo of him and his daughter, writing, "I had a thrilling life in 2020. The pandemic has shown a fragile and helpless world. I am thankful to be Chinese, living in a country that is committed to fighting the pandemic, enabling my family and I to live in a healthy and peaceful life."
"2020 is about to end, and the new year will be even better," he added.
His remarks aroused heated discussions among netizens. While some netizens left messages of support for his appreciation of the central government; others expressed disappointment with his remarks, saying that it was another one of Pakho's attempts to get on mainlanders' good side.
This idea was fuelled by the fact that the post came not long after many mainland netizens questioned why Pakho was given the opportunity to perform at the upcoming New Year's Eve event in mainland China.
It is noted that Pakho was previously accused of supporting Hong Kong independence after he posted a message online encouraging his fellow Hong Kong people to go out and vote. He eventually dismissed the accusation, saying that he had never expressed any political position.
At the same time, some also questioned as to why the post was only published on Weibo and not on Instagram - the social media platform that most of his Hong Kong fans use.
