Best Supporting Actress
Weekly Commentary (Updated Nov. 30, 2023): Da’Vine Joy Randolph delivers a standout performance in “The Holdovers” as Mary Lamb, a cafeteria worker mourning her son’s loss, and the critics are noticing. She secured the supporting actress prize in New York for her work in the Focus Features dramedy, potentially signaling a promising awards journey ahead and a formidable contender against “Oppenheimer” star Emily Blunt.
And then we have the women from the musical “The Color Purple.”
Danielle Brooks and Taraji P. Henson, the standout from Blitz Bazawule’s daring re-imagining of Alice Walker’s beloved novel are both vying for recognition in this fiercely competitive supporting actress race. Could both secure nominations? All within the realm of possibility.
As the spirited and no-nonsense wife to Harpo (Corey Hawkins), Brooks’ Sofia is positioned as the hopeful and joyous anchor in a narrative that, at times, carries a thematic weight, craving moments of levity. She achieves this with aplomb in sequences like “Hell No,” reminiscent of the impactful “Cell Block Tango” from the best picture-winning musical “Chicago,” which showcased supporting actress winner Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Henson definitely has an edge as a former nominee for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” in the role of Shug Avery. She gives it her all, and her colleagues may reward her troubles.

The submission deadline for general categories is Nov. 15, 2023. The preliminary shortlist for eight categories is from Dec. 14-18, with the results announcement dropping on Dec. 21. The Oscar nomination period will run from Jan. 11-16, 2024, with the official nominees named on Jan. 23.

About the Academy Awards
The Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars, is Hollywood’s most prestigious artistic award in the film industry. Since 1927, nominees and winners have been selected by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). Seventeen branches are represented within the nearly 10,000-person membership. The branches are actors, associates, casting directors, cinematographers, costume designers, directors, documentary, executives, film editors, makeup and hairstylists, marketing and public relations, members-at-large, members-at-large (artists’ representatives), music, producers, production design, short films and feature animation, sound, visual effects and writers.
