Original Power Rangers unimpressed with reboot
The multi-coloured heroes of the original Power Rangers series don’t seem to be too impressed with the recent big screen reboot.
In fact, the black ranger and the blue ranger have gone on record to voice their disappointment.
Speaking at the C2E2 Convention in Chicago – via Comicbook – Walter Jones (below, second from left), who played ranger Zack Taylor complained that his character’s custom fighting style, ‘hip hop kido’, did not feature.
“I was a little disappointed that they changed the characters around a little bit because I wanted Zack to be with his kido because Hip Hop Kido was a really important element of who I was on Power Rangers,” he said.
“I think if they would have added that then there could have been some parkour and there could have been so many other elements to that character that it would have been awesome.”
David Yost (above, far right), who played the blue ranger Billy Cranston, had his own gripes, meanwhile.
“The only thing I care about progression wise when they do a sequel and they morph they better bring it and they better say ‘It’s Morphin Time,’” he said.
“When we said, ‘It’s morphing time!,’ it was like, ‘S**t’s about to go down’. When they said it in the movie it was so lackadaisical. I was like, ‘Are you kidding me?’”
So more ‘hip hop kido’, and more ‘it’s morphing time’. Hope you’ve got that, Lionsgate.
But the movie is clearly missing something – and that’s a hefty enough box office return to merit the talk of a sequel.
Having been out since late March, box office sales have only reached $130 million (£101 million), not good when your movie cost $100 million (£78 million) to make.
Prior to its lacklustre box office performance, however, the producers of the movie had floated the possibility of a potential ‘five to seven’ movie series.
