The financially troubled Asian Television Awards has had its funding from the Singapore government withdrawn.

The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) had pulled its funding for the 2018 awards and removed the event from the Singapore Media Festival, according to a report by marketing news website Mumbrella Asia on Wednesday (22 May).

An IMDA spokesperson said, “The Asian Television Awards Pte Ltd and IMDA, which hosts the Singapore Media Festival, have mutually agreed to terminate the sponsorship agreement for the Asian Television Awards.”

The former organiser of the annual industry awards, Contineo Media, lost a lawsuit earlier this month by production company activeTV over unpaid fees and was ordered by a court to pay its contractor $292,000 plus costs. Contineo was also fined by the Ministry of Manpower last year after reportedly not paying its workers their salaries and CPF contributions.

The awards ceremony, however, still seems to be going ahead as its website is still calling for entries for the event scheduled for 7 and 8 December 2018 at Suntec Convention and Exhibition Centre. Mumbrella Asia said the staff and operations of Contineo had been transferred to another company called Clarus Marketing. Both firms are owned by Singaporean media mogul Raymond Wong.
