One World Sports Network Drops Off Dish; Sides Blame Each Other
One World Sports, the Connecticut-based multiplatform sports network, said today that it will not extend a five-year agreement with Dish and its Sling platform, dropping off the platform immediately. Dish counters that it made the decision, not One World.
According to a statement released by One World, the decision was “largely driven by Dish’s desire for certain (most favored nations) provisions, which limit a network’s ability to expand in a rapidly changing marketplace.” The network says the Dish terms “were imbalanced relative to the network’s carriage” and that One World’s “preference was to provide another in a series of short-term extensions while we worked through a new agreement reflecting our limited availability to Dish subscribers.”
The net added, “Regrettably, Dish declined an extension, and we were forced to make the difficult decision to discontinue carriage with Dish at this time.” One World said it was seeking carriage in a domestic sports package and in HD across all of its platforms, “rather than continue to be packaged as an ethnic channel, and in SD.”
Contacted by Deadline, Dish sent the following statement: “Dish constantly evaluates the content we carry and we work to provide channels that our customers’ demand. As a result, sometimes channels are removed based on a combination of customer interest and business terms to carry the channels. For these reasons, One World Sports was removed from the Dish platform.”
One World features domestic sports events such as Ivy League football as well as sports from outside the U.S. including soccer, cricket, hockey and table tennis, among others. “Those viewers interested in continuing to watch our marquee, live and original, sports content from the U.S. and around the globe, should contact their local distributor or national distributors BitTorrent, fuboTV or PlayStation Vue,” the network’s statement said.
