"Ola Bola", "Polis Evo" lead FFM 28 nominations

"Ola Bola" leads with 14 nominations, including Best Non-Bahasa Malaysia Film.

4 Aug – The 28th Malaysia Film Festival (FFM 28), also known as Festival Filem Malaysia ke-28, has revealed its list of nominations for this year.

Chiu Keng Guan's "Ola Bola" leads the pack with 14 nominations, including Best Child Actor, Best New Actress, Best Actor, Best Supporting as well as Best Non-Bahasa Malaysia Director and Best Non-Bahasa Malaysia Film.

The football-themed movie, which collected RM15.85 million at the box office, also receives six nominations in the technical categories such as Best Special Effects, Best Original Theme Song, Best Origial Score, Best Art Design, Best Editing and Best Costume Design.

Meanwhile, following close behind is "Polis Evo", which made history as the highest-grossing Malaysian movie with its collection of RM17.47 million, doesn't disappoint as it receives 10 nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Screenplay.

The Ghaz Abu Bakar movie also gets nominated in technical categories, Best Sound Mixing, Best Editing, Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design.

Syamsul Yusof's horror title, "Munafik", and Shanjhey Kumar Perumal's "Jagat" both bag nine nominations each, though the latter is mostly nominated in the Non-Bahasa Malaysia categories.

This year's festival is not without its controversy, however, as the introduction of the separate Non Bahasa-Malaysia categories has raised the ire of local industry players and fans alike.

There have been outcries due to movies such as "Ola Bola" and "Jagat", which many deemed as movies that should be winning FFM this year, being shunned out of the Best Film spotlight by being lumped in unnecessary Non-Bahasa Malaysia categories.

In spite of the controversy, the main award ceremony is already scheduled to take place this 3 September at Plenary Hall, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).
