An Obi-Wan Kenobi movie is in the works

It’s been in the works for a while now but Disney has just confirmed it: the studio is working on a solo Obi-Wan Kenobi movie. And in keeping with their M.O. of recruiting directors with a striking style for the Star Wars movies, they’re courting a somewhat unexpected name to direct it.

.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Oscar-nominated Stephen Daldry, 56, best known for Billy Elliot and The Hours, is in early talks to direct the movie. There is no script yet – and no actors attached – but Daldry would oversee the development and writing with Lucasfilm brass, if all goes well. His most recent efforts: directing several episodes of The Crown (see our review).

.

In case you needed reminding, Obi-Wan was a Jedi Master and mentor to Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) in the original 1977 movie and was first played by the late Sir Alec Guinness. A younger version of the character, who was also mentor to Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) was played by Ewan McGregor in the Star Wars prequels. It’s worth noting that McGregor has expressed interest in playing the character again and had a (very) brief cameo in The Force Awakens.

.

The Obi-Wan movie is one of several being developed by Lucasfilm. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (see our review) was very well-received, while the Han Solo movie is being helmed by Ron Howard – notwithstanding its original directors being fired. . What do you think, geeks – do you want to see an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie?
