NYFW Roundup: Which Fashion Tribe Do You Belong To?
1/26Vintage Hipster: This woman has grown up spending time in Brooklyn. She might not live there anymore and may have decamped to Harlem and to upstate New York on weekends, but when she is in town, she spends her evenings at Metrograph watching obscure Korean movies and showings of Jaws. She is a diehard fan of Rachel Comey, Ryan Roche, Apiece Apart, and Creatures of Comfort. She is happy wearing an overpriced crewneck sweater with no label. This is your Williamsburg friend who had a baby but will continue to go see Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem when they do reunion tours! She wants to know what is “on trend” just to see what the kids are up to, but she is OK with high-waisted jeans, and culottes with Gucci loafers is about as trendy as she will go.

Baja East, Gypsy Sport, Alexander Wang, and Hood by Air are wardrobe staples for her, and Rihanna is her queen (sorry, Bey). Between Battle Hymn, ElevenEleven, and the occasional Horse Meat Disco with Ladyfag, Hari Nef, and the gang, she is more about the fun, the impractical, and how to stand out from the crowd rather than be lost in the crowd. Individuality and the ability to express herself is what makes this club kyd care more about VFiles than anything else!]()

#NYFW16 is officially over, the last of Marc Jacobs’s ladies just exited the building, and as we pack for London for its fashion week, we look back at what NYFW meant in terms of fashion trends. These days, the hemline of the skirt, the studs on the jacket, or the hue of the dress is great and all, but with the increasing popularity of the “see now, buy now” concept, we don’t really have the time to ponder, consider, and deliberate what next spring’s trends will be.
With Instagram and Snapchat going full-out on fashion coverage, we deliver to you our roundup of NYFW trends through the eyes of which lifestyle tribe you belong to. In the ’70s, we had Woody Allen’s movies to help us figure out if we were uptown ladies or downtown girls; in the 1990s and early 2000s, we had the ladies of Sex and the City to determine which character we identified with; and now, we have social life to help us with our fashion choices. So whether you are a hardcore club kid on a first-name basis with LadyFag or a Brooklyn-loving, farmers’-market shopping pottery maker, New York Fashion Week has you covered, with countless looks to determine which fashion tribe you belong to!
