Nick Gordon's Domestic Violence Arrest Adds 'Additional Layer of Evidence' to Bobbi Kristina Case, D.A. Says

The recent domestic battery arrest of Nick Gordon may shed some light on to what happened to his late girlfriend, Bobbi Kristina Brown, according to the authorities investigating her 2015 death.

The Fulton County District Attorney’s office told PEOPLE in a statement Tuesday, “We have consistently refrained from commenting on our investigation into the death of Bobbi Kristina Brown because of our general policy regarding commenting on open criminal investigations.”

“However, it goes without saying that the arrest of Nick Gordon in the Florida domestic violence case will certainly add an additional layer of evidence to the final resolution of this matter.”

The D.A. office’s criminal investigation into Bobbi Kristina’s death remains ongoing, and no charges have been brought.

Gordon was arrested for domestic battery and false imprisonment over the weekend in Sanford, Florida, after allegedly beating up his current girlfriend and holding her in her home.

The arrest was first reported by TMZ, and the Seminole County Sheriff’s office confirmed the charges to PEOPLE.

Gordon was Bobbi Kristina’s longtime boyfriend when she was found unconscious and unresponsive in the bathtub of the Georgia townhouse they shared in January 2015.

After receiving medical care at a hospital, Bobbi Kristina – the only daughter of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown – was transferred to an Atlanta-area hospice facility, where she died in July of that year.

Gordon was found civilly liable for Bobbi Kristina’s death last November and ordered to pay $36 million to her estate. Despite failing to appear twice in the wrongful death suit, Gordon has consistently denied having any involvement in his girlfriend’s death.
