Next Tottenham manager handed massive first setback as assistant refuses to come with him, stating ‘this is my club’
A manager who is in Daniel Levy’s thinking for the Tottenham head coach role may have to come to England on his own as his assistant has refused to follow him to the Premier League.
The options available to Levy appear to be dwindling. Last week, it emerged Tottenham had moved away from prime candidate Julian Nagelsmann. Despite club chiefs having great respect for the German, they do not view him as the right manager to end their trophy drought right now.
Tottenham were previously tipped to move in for Vincent Kompany, who has done a fantastic job this season to help Burnley win the Championship title. However, Kompany has signed a long-term contract with the Clarets, ending all rumours of a summer move away from Turf Moor.
Spurs recently turned their attention to former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, who has enjoyed a good campaign with Bayer Leverkusen in Germany. But Alonso recently confirmed he will be staying at Leverkusen.
Levy must now choose between Brentford boss Thomas Frank and Feyenoord coach Arne Slot. The latest reports suggest Slot is the favourite to be offered the job. He has pretty much taken Feyenoord as far as they can go after guiding them to this season’s Eredivisie title.
Feyenoord will try to offer Slot a big new contract to prevent him from leaving, but it is likely the lure of the Premier League will be too enticing to turn down.
Although, Slot will have to be without his right hand man if he takes charge of the North London club. His assistant, John de Wolf, has revealed he will be staying in the Netherlands no matter if Slot stays or goes.
“Then I wish him a good challenge,” Wolf said of Slot (via Sport Witness). “This is my club, this is where I belong, this is my home. I still get goosebumps every day when I drive over the bridge.”

When asked to provide an insight on Slot’s future, Wolf added: “We didn’t talk about that at all. I have sometimes said in the early stages, don’t listen to any other club in the Netherlands anyway.”
Slot places a lot of trust in Wolf so it will be a major blow if he has to find a new assistant at Spurs. However, Levy should have the funds to pay for a top alternative to arrive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and aid Slot.
Spurs fans will be hoping the 44-year-old can follow in Erik ten Hag’s footsteps by making a big impact in England after leaving the Netherlands. Ten Hag has helped Manchester United win the Carabao Cup, reach the FA Cup final and put themselves in a good position to qualify for next season’s Champions League during his first year at Old Trafford.
The managerial position is not the only role Levy must fill as soon as possible. He is also on the hunt for a new director of football after Fabio Paratici left in April.
Spurs are interested in Tim Steidten, who is a free agent after departing Leverkusen earlier this year, as well as Brentford chief Lee Dykes.
Meanwhile, a senior Spurs ace is attracted by the prospect of tripling his salary by joining one particular club, and he could also link up with the world’s best player.
