SM Entertainment Invests in Indie Label Baljunso to Spotlight Nonmainstream Music

Stepping foot into other areas in the music industry, SM Entertainment has made an investment in the indie label Baljunso.

“The goal of Baljunso is to re-spotlight and revive the nonmainstream genre, which includes hip-hop and bands, instead of the influential idol format in K-pop,” said CEO Kang Byung Yong on February 26.

“SM Entertainment, who plays a leading role in hallyu culture, has invested [in Baljunso] to highlight and globalize the diversity of K-pop, and as an affiliated label, we have established a firm cooperative relationship for national and global distribution, marketing, and additional businesses.”

Baljunso was founded in 1991 by Kang Byung Yong, the former CEO of Can Entertainment who discovered many talents including Kim Jong Seo, Jang Hye Jin, Park Sang Min, and Can

Now affiliated with SM Entertainment, Baljunso will hold the Baljunso World Wide Promotion event in Hongdae on March 8, featuring the bands HLIN, Love and Peace, EZEN, rookie hip-hop crew Play the Siren, and more.
