New Star Trek TV Series Hires Hannibal's Bryan Fuller

CBS has hired ‘Hannibal’ head writer Bryan Fuller to sit in the captain’s chair and run its new 'Star Trek’ TV series as co-creator and executive producer.

Fuller joins after his critically-adored take on the Hannibal Lecter story was cancelled by NBC after three seasons following poor ratings. The news is sure to delight Trekkies around the world.

“My very first experience of 'Star Trek’ is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls,“ said Fuller in a statement.

"Before seeing a frame of the television series, the 'Star Trek’ universe lit my imagination on fire. It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand new iteration of 'Star Trek’ with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no 'Star Trek’ series has gone before.”

Fuller has worked with the franchise before, writing for 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’ and 'Voyager’ in the early days of his career. He began as a freelance writer, but was eventually hired as a staff writer and then became a co-producer.

'Hannibal’ aside, he is best known for writing for the beloved first season of 'Heroes’ and creating acclaimed series 'Pushing Daisies’.

“Bringing 'Star Trek’ back to television means returning it to its roots, and for years those roots flourished under Bryan’s devoted care,” said executive producer Kurtzman.

“His encyclopaedic knowledge of 'Trek’ canon is surpassed only by his love for Gene Roddenberry’s optimistic future, a vision that continues to guide us as we explore strange new worlds.”

The new 'Star Trek’ series is set to debut in January 2017, with its first episode set to air on CBS television before all subsequent episodes debut exclusively on CBS’s All Access digital distribution network.
