A movie and a new series of 90s cartoon Rugrats has been given the green light.

Variety reports that Nickelodeon and Paramount is working on both a new 26-episode run, and the feature-length project.

The movie will combine CGI characters with live action.

The show ran for nine series and 172 episodes through the 90s and early 2000s, airing its final episode in 2004.

It followed the adventures of toddlers Tommy and Angelica Pickles, Chuckie Finster, and twins Phil and Lil DeVille, and featured voice performances from Simpsons legends Nancy Cartwright and Dan Castellaneta, as well as memorable music from Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh.

“Rugrats is hands-down one of the most celebrated cartoons in TV history, and we are thrilled for a whole new audience to meet these iconic characters in brand-new adventures,” said Viacom Media Networks and interim Nickelodeon president Sarah Levy said.

“What was true in 1991 when the original show premiered is still true today: kids are fascinated with the world of babies. We can’t wait for today’s kids to meet Tommy, Chuckie and pals.”

“Kids who grew up with Tommy Pickles and the Rugrats crew will now be able to share that experience with their own children,” added Brian Robbins, President of Paramount Players.

The movie will be directed by David Goodman, and is slated for release on November 13, 2020.
