New fashion and art festival to launch at supermarket in Jurong
Visitors to the Big Box hypermart will soon be able to view fashion designs and artwork while shopping for groceries. From 20 to 22 October, the supermarket at the mall in Jurong East will host the inaugural fashion and art festival OUTSIDER.
Billed as an “anti-elitist” festival, it will showcase fashion and art exhibitions of designers and visual artists from Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Thailand, and Malaysia, as well as Singapore.
With the backdrop of a supermarket, organisers hope that visitors can immerse themselves in the fashion and art showcased through a familiar setting.
Festival director Zachary Goh said, “Both fashion and art have a profound cause and effect on present society, often mirroring or even shaping pop culture, yet current fashion and arts festivals can come off as highbrow and ostracise the wider community. What OUTSIDER sets out to achieve is an open presentation that everyone can identify with, pulling visitors into the minds of these creative leaders from across the region.”
Singaporean-born artist Simon Ng, the festival’s headlining artist, is collaborating with fashion label Voltaire Visions for an exhibit featuring artwork and apparel.
There will also be art installations by 10 local artists and 45 works by fashion graduates from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). The works by the NAFA graduates will be displayed for an extended period, from 20-29 October.
