Netflix Releases First Trailer for "Audrie & Daisy," a Documentary About High School Sexual Assault

From Cosmopolitan

Audrie & Daisy, a new documentary that tells the story of what happened to two high school students who were sexually assaulted in different parts of the country, will premiere on Netflix in September. Some eight months after purchasing the film at the Sundance Film Festival, where the doc premiered to rave reviews, Netflix released the first trailer for Audrie & Daisy this week. In 2012, Audrie Pott and Daisy Coleman were attacked while passed out from drinking in Saratoga, California, and Maryville, Missouri, respectively. Pott died by suicide shortly after photos of her assault spread on social media. Coleman, who was allegedly attacked by a group of boys that included the grandson of a four-term Missouri state representative, also attempted suicide. She lived, but her town eventually turned against her and her family, forcing them to move.

Cosmopolitan.com spoke to directors Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk at Sundance earlier this year. "There needs to be an open, honest conversation about what is right and wrong," Shenk said at the time. "Maybe there is never going to be a great legal solution to what happens when a guy and a girl are alone in a room. But, in general, is it good to be messing around with a girl if she is passed out? No matter what side of the topic you are on, any human being with common sense will say no, that's wrong."

Audrie & Daisy will premiere on Netflix and in theaters Sept. 23.
