Neill Blomkamp’s Alien Sequel On Hold

‘Alien 5’ may have almost destroyed the internet with impressive concept art, but it looks as though the only ‘Alien’ movie we’ll be getting is Ridley Scott’s.

Director Neill Blomkamp has confirmed that his upcoming ‘Alien’ sequel has been put on hold indefinitely, and he’ll be moving on to other projects.

“Alien is kinda holding/ pending prometheus 2,” he said via Twitter. “So I shall be working on other things… as much as I love the xeno- and Lt ripley”

Unfortunately, this news doesn’t come as a massive shock.

There’s been rumours for some time that 20th Century Fox had put the film on pause until after Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’ sequel… at Scott’s request. Then, just a few weeks back, we got our first teased glimpse at the ‘Prometheus’ sequel’s title – ‘Alien: Paradise Lost’.

It certainly seems as though Ridley Scott is trying to reclaim the ‘Alien’ franchise… and it seems to have left Blomkamp’s film high and dry.

It certainly looks as though Ridley Scott’s film is now ever-closer to the original ‘Alien’, and perhaps that’s why Blomkamp’s sequel has been shelved. After all, if Scott is taking the reins of the ‘Alien’ franchise proper, it makes Blomkamp’s movie a tad unnecessary.

Of course, Blomkamp does state that the film is ‘holding’ so pehaps it will be back…

But I wouldn’t count on that happening anytime soon.

‘Alien: Paradise Lost’ is expected to begin filming early 2016, which likely would have meant a 2017 start for Neill Blomkamp’s ‘Alien’ film… and with Ridley Scott planning a number of other ‘Prometheus’ sequels, even that wasn’t guaranteed.

The original plan was apparently for Blomkamp to continue working on his ‘Alien’ sequel while Ridley Scott produced ‘Paradise Lost’… and this even resulted in Blomkamp making some tweaks to his film’s core concept to accommodate.

But it seems that just wasn’t enough.

Where will Neill Blomkamp go from here? That much is uncertain. Could we finally get the follow-up to his breakout hit ‘District 9’ or will he be tempted by another sci-fi franchise?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

‘Alien: Paradise Lost’ heads to cinemas on 30 May 2017.
