NBA player Reggie Bullock knows what it’s like to deal with personal tragedy. His sister Mia Henderson was murdered in Baltimore in July of 2014. She was a member of the transgender community, targeted because she was different.

In an interview with The Herd, Bullock opened up about the moment when he found out that his older brother Kevin was transitioning into a woman named Mia.

“It wasn’t so tough because we kinda had seen it…He lived as himself. He taught me how to be myself, he taught me how to take care of the family, he was happy to be who he was. He wasn’t worried about how others felt about him.”

It’s clear from the get-go that Mia was a very important person in Bullock’s life. He went on to say, “A person who can isolate the whole world and not care about other people’s feelings is a strong person, so I think that was one of the biggest things that I got from him.”

Asked whether knowing and loving Mia made Bullock, “more progressive, open-minded and accepting person,” he responded,“Yes, definitely. […] A lot of people joke about those kinds of people — but me it touches me because I had a brother, I had a person who was close to me who was that way, so never would I laugh…He was just strong, he left me with that, and that’s how I go about my life.”

We know that Bullock is inspiring others by raising awareness that it’s okay to be different and by openly and frankly discussing a topic that all too often gets swept under the rug. No one deserves to be a victim because of who they are or how they choose to present themselves to the world.

Here’s the full clip of Bullock’s interview. We’re so incredibly inspired by his message.
