An Australian mum took to social media earlier this week to share a now-viral parenting hack she used to protect her son on the beach this summer.

Megan Wilson trialled the idea of creating her own DIY paddling pool on a recent trip to the seaside and all it requires is an old shower curtain.

The Facebook post amassed over 222,000 shares in total and fellow parents took to the digital platform to thank the mum for sharing the top tip.

According to the Royal Life Saving Society, almost 60 children drown every year and the DIY hack could help ensure kids are safe during the summer holidays.

But although many were quick to tag their friends and help spread the word, some social media users expressed concern.

One Facebook user commented: “Fine as long as people take them home, we don’t need more plastic on our beaches and in the sea.”

While another argued, “What a waste to chuck it out after only one use. Not a great idea adding to plastic pollution. Surely it can be reused multiple times? Or just make a hole in the sand like normal?”

For those hoping to give the makeshift paddling pool a go this summer, all you need to do is dig a circular hole in the sand and lay the shower curtain liner flat within it. Then, cover the edges with sand to ensure it stays in place.

To ensure your child doesn’t feel left out this summer, fill the paddling pool with sea water so that they can have fun on the beach without wandering out of eyesight.

But if you prefer to use your own shop bought paddling pool then another viral parenting tip is sure to prove useful.

Mum-of-eight Deborah Hitchens recently shared a hack suggested by fellow mother Sarah Jane Bennett via the Family Days Tried & Tested Facebook group.

She recommends using an old fitted sheet to protect the pool from grass and insects while it’s not in use. Unsurprisingly, the top tip soon garnered over 10,000 shares and 2,000 comments from fellow parents.
