Mum crowdsources feedback for baby's 'boring' name

Picking a name for your baby comes with all sorts of pressures.

Not only have you got to find something that you and your other half both like, but you’ve got to both like it for the rest of your little one’s life.

The problem is that baby name regret is an actual thing.

And that’s exactly what has happened to one mum who went online to ask for some advice after falling out of love with her daughter’s name.

The mum, whose daughter is now three, explained that she was regretting naming her Evelyn after a series of negative comments about it.

“I know people are going to say not to worry but it’s something that I think about regularly,” the mum started her post on Mumsnet.

She went on to say that her name is never shortened to Evie and it was picked for sentimental reasons.

“When we named her I had never been on a site like this and having never met another little Evelyn I didn’t know it was popular (still haven’t met another one in our area!) however I get really sad that it is pretty much always called boring or horrible on this site,” she explained.

“I very rarely see anything positive about it and it makes me regret not calling her Eliza.”

The soon-to-be mum-of-two finished her post by saying she’s not sure how to learn to love her daughter’s name again and asking if anyone has been in a similar situation with their own child’s name.

Boring or beautiful?

And people were quick to respond to the mum’s emotional admission, with many telling the mum it was a lovely name.

“Evelyn is a gorgeous name! Honestly. Beautiful. Ignore the haters!” one user wrote.

“Ignore the comments,” another commented. “Evelyn is a beautiful name and I’ve also not met anyone under nine with that name! You loved the name once and will you again, just ignore the opinions of people who don’t matter to you on here!!”

“I think it’s a beautiful name!” agreed another mum. “You can’t please all the people all the time- and you shouldn’t have 2! You picked her name for your own reasons so who gives a toss what other people think.”

Other parents stepped in to share similar stories of their own baby name bashing.

“There was a thread on here about DDs name recently as well and it was universally voted down as too common with most people being “over it”,” one woman shared.

“I still love it and so does dd (12). Don’t worry about anyone else she will grow into it and you won’t be able to imagine her being called anything else.”

“I often see my DD’s name come up on here as ‘awful’ or ‘oldladyish’ or some such nonsense,” another user wrote.

“I think it is a beautiful name that is why I chose it – I don’t give a monkey’s what anyone else thinks.”

Other people pointed out that with baby names you’re never going to please everyone.

“I guarantee if every person here started a thread about their own name it would get a variety of responses: classic, boring, dull, beautiful, ok, hideous, lovely, reminds me of someone who picked her nose and ate it in primary school.

“No name is universally like and that is fine! Evelyn is a perfectly nice name and you need to stop worrying about what people on the Internet say about it. She is three years old this is her name for life. In the nicest and most supportive way possible, get over it!”

Evelyn isn’t the only divisive baby name. Awesome, Lucifer and Nun are among the more unusual baby names chosen by Scottish parents last year.

While earlier this year, a mother opened up about her decision to name her child “Baby”.

Meanwhile a man sparked a debate online, after he revealed that his girlfriend wants to name their baby after her ex-boyfriend.

And a mum-to-be cancelled her upcoming baby shower after family and friends questioned her choice of name for her unborn child; Squire Sebastian Senator.

While Squire Sebastian Senator is certainly an unusual name choice, another mother recently got criticised for naming her daughter Abcde.
