The fact that Oscar gowns cost an insane amount of money – sometimes more than most Americans make in a year – is not exactly breaking news. But here's an angle you've maybe never considered in your awards season mental arithmetic: once that custom-made gown is ready, it still has to get from the designer to the celebrity, and the transportation alone costs a lot of money.

During an interview on Sirius XM's The Michelle Collins Show, designer Christian Siriano broke down this hidden cost. "“t’s so much money to make these custom things and send them around the world,” Siriano said. "I mean, it can be $2,000 to overnight a large box to LA." In 2018, Siriano said that his team sent roughly 100 dresses from New York to Los Angeles for celebrities to wear to the Oscars or surrounding events, so his estimated FedEx bill would be around $50,000. Whoopi Goldberg, Laurie Metcalf, Kelly Ripa and Janet Mock were among the celebrities who wore Christian Siriano gowns to the 2018 ceremony.

At this point, you're probably wondering why the celebrities themselves don't pay for shipping, but according to Siriano it's simply not part of the deal. As he explained, "most [celebrities and stylists] don't have a budget for shipping", so if you want an A-lister to wear your gown, you're footing the FedEx bill. But even if stylists end up making a loss during awards season, as many of them do, the exposure is ultimately worth the financial hit.
