MTV Movie Awards 2016: Star Wars, Jurassic World & Deadpool Scoop Prizes

Hosted by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Kevin Hart, the MTV Movie Awards 2016 were always going to be eventful, as ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, ‘Jurassic World’, and ‘Deadpool’ walked away with wins.

With the MTV crowd voting considerably different from that of the Academy, this was more about celebrating mainstream popularity and successes, so naturally ‘The Force Awakens’ won Movie of the Year, beating off stiff competition from ‘Deadpool’, ‘Jurassic World’, and ‘Straight Outta Compton’.

The latter, however, was the recipient of the True Story accolade, fending off Leonardo DiCaprio’s ‘The Revenant’ and Jennifer Lawrence’s ‘Joy’. But Lawrence didn’t go home empty-handed, as she won Best Hero for her final appearance as Katniss Everdeen in ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2′.

‘The Force Awakens’ dominated other categories, with wins for Daisy Ridley for Breakthrough Performance and Adam Driver scooping Best Villain for his intense portrayal of Kylo Ren.

Elsewhere, Chris Pratt was beaten to Best Male by ‘The Revenant’s’ Leonardo DiCaprio, but the actor did win Best Action Performance for Colin Trevorrow’s monster hit. ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’s’ Charlize Theron took home the award for Best Female Performance.

Comic book heroes didn’t miss out though. ‘Deadpool’s’ Ryan Reynolds was among the winners, as he nabbed Best Comedic Performance and Best Fight (alongside the film’s villain Ed Skrein).

Amy Poehler won Best Virtual Performance for her role as Joy in Disney Pixar’s ‘Inside Out’, and Oscar-winner ‘Amy’ was awarded Best Documentary.

Comedy ‘Pitch Perfect 2′ won Best Ensemble, beating ‘Fast & Furious 7′ and Avengers: ‘Age of Ultron’. The film’s star, Rebel Wilson, was also presented with Best Kiss, for her lip-locking action with co-star Adam DeVine.

Will Smith received acknowledgement for his contribution to films with the Generation Award, while Rebel Wilson was awarded the Comedic Genius trophy.
