Mr Bean founder to head new Gong Cha franchisee in Singapore

Bubble tea brand Gong Cha has appointed a new Master Franchisee, headed by Mr Bean founder Kang Puay Seng, to lead its relaunch and expansion in Singapore.

In a statement on Friday (4 Aug), Royal Taiwan Tea Co. Ltd, the company behind the Gong Cha brand, said Kang had “extensive experience in running food and beverage businesses”, growing the soy milk brand to nearly 70 stores before selling the business.

Royal Taiwan Tea said it had received mored than 100 applications for the master franchise in Singapore, after former franchise holder RTG Holdings decided not to continue and instead started the new brand LiHo in May.

“Given the strength Gong Cha’s brand in Singapore, we wanted to pick the right partner. Mr Kang’s extensive experience in F&B, coupled with his hands-on approach, detailed operational knowledge and commitment to quality make him a right fit for Gong Cha,” Royal Taiwan Tea said of Kang, who will lead Gong Cha (Singapore) Pte Ltd.

“Singapore has always been a key market for Gong Cha. Since the end of our previous franchise agreement, we have emphasised that we very much intend to continue to have a presence here,” Royal Taiwan Tea said.

“The appointment of the new master franchisee is the first step in our quest to bring back the old Gong Cha that everyone knows and loves, but in a better way than before.”

Gong Cha said it plans to launch its first store in the third quarter of 2017, and hopes to open multiple outlets in the following months. It also planning to unveil a fresh look for the Gong Cha stores in Singapore. There will also be new offerings on the menu, in addition to the well-loved original favourites.
