Sure, perhaps Margot Robbie wouldn’t be the first actress to spring to mind to play the steadfast, so-called ‘virgin queen’ Queen Elizabeth I, the last monarch of the Tudor dynasty.

But that – as ever – has not stopped movie buffs from giving one of Hollywood’s most recent casting decisions a bit of a kicking.

The ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ and ‘Suicide Squad’ star is to play Elizabeth in the forthcoming ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ movie, with the excellent Saoirse Ronan in the lead.

The Josie Rourke-directed movie will tell the story of how Mary Stuart, after a brief stint as the queen consort of France, had laid claim to her cousin Elizabeth’s throne,

and was later executed for her trouble, but not before an 18-year stint in prison.

And while it’s not 100% greenlit – with Robbie ‘in negotiations’ as we speak – it’s not stopped folk giving their two cents.

It’s fair to say there’s a bit of scepticism out there too…

It’s not all merciless mockery, of course. Some fans are well up for it.

By some rather stark contrast, Robbie is currently starring in the biopic ‘Goodbye Christopher Robbin’, playing the wife of Winnie the Pooh writer A.A. Milne.

Robbie shot to fame in Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’, and was more recently seen as fan-favourite super-villain sidekick Harley Quinn in ‘Suicide Squad’. The Aussie star is set to reprise the role in the ‘Suicide Squad’ sequel, and a female-led spin-off ‘Gotham City Sirens’.
