While most Brits stayed firmly put in 2020, with many preferring staycations over international travel, it seems the few who did make the trip overseas favoured one destination over others.

According to hostel booking platform, Hostelworld, Athens was the top choice for Brits looking for a city break this past summer.

In fact, Hostelworld says it saw an increase of 400% in searches for stays in the city between April and October this year.

Greece was given the ‘green light’ early on when the UK announced its travel corridor system.

Greece also wasn’t quarantining incoming passengers, which made it a tidy option for a summer getaway.

Athens, of course, is the Greek capital but it is also the gateway to the Greek islands - a summer staple for British vacationers.

While the more famous islands of Santorini and Mykonos were eventually re-added to the UK quarantine list (and subsequently taken off again), there are 227 inhabited Greek islands to explore.

Green-lighted locales seem to be the most searched for city break destinations for summer 2020, according to Hostelworld.
