The Surrealist —  Nathalie Djurberg, Visual Artist

Swedish contemporary artist Nathalie Djurberg, 38, seamlessly combines three mediums: sculpture, video installation, and sound art. The final product — a fantasy-like, short Claymation film backed by psychedelic beats — often explores femininity in a nontraditional way (which helps explain why designer Miuccia Prada is a fan). Many of her clay figurines are grossly overweight, and she often mixes animals with humans: In one video, a woman gives birth to a rhino. In 2009, she won the Silver Lion Award at the Venice Biennale for Promising Young Artist. Recently, Djurberg has shown her work at the Fondazione Prada Museum in Milan and currently displays at the Zach Feuer and Lisson galleries in New York City.

Check back in throughout the month to see which kick-ass women made our list.
