Your festive prayers have been answered: a Morrisons own-brand champagne has been crowned the best festive own-label supermarket bubbly.

The budget fizz beat the likes of Harvey Nichols and Waitrose together with offerings from all other supermarkets.

This is according to Good Housekeeping’s annual festive fizz taste test, in which the Morrisons The Best Brut Premier Cru Champagne was awarded 78 points out of 100.

The panel was looking for “a balanced fizz, packed with delicate bubbles, well-integrated rich notes and a pleasant, lasting finish.”

“A light aroma with a pleasant citrus-y flavour. Testers enjoyed the amount of large bubbles, but some found they gave way to little lingering aftertaste,” was the testers’ verdict on the Morrisons bottle.

The champagne is available online and in stores nationwide now for £21.

"Our champagne has to be the best bottle available at this price, it’s great to see that Good Housekeeping’s experts agree,” said Clive Donaldson, Morrisons Wine Expert, in a statement.

While it won out compared to other supermarket brands, the Bradford-based supermarket chain’s champagne came joint fourth overall in the taste taste – sharing fourth place with the considerably posher Taittinger Nocturne City Lights NV, which retails at £35 a bottle from Tesco.

The fizz that got the highest score overall was Bollinger Special Cuvée – winning by a marginal five points.

However, at £46, this tipple is more than double the price of the Morrisons variety – more than enough reason to stand by the cheaper alternative.

While some may use Champagne as a generic term for all sparkling wine, the real incarnation is a French sparkling wine which must come from the region of the same name, and be produced in a specific way.
